How Ontario HST works
Ontario charges one sales tax, the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), at 13%: the 5% federal GST and an 8% provincial portion collected together. There's no separate provincial sales tax on top.
- HST = price before tax × 13%
- Total = price before tax × 1.13
Example: on a price of 100.00, the HST is 13.00 and the total is 113.00.
Removing HST from a total
- Price before tax = total ÷ 1.13
Example: a total of 56.50 is 50.00 before HST (HST 6.50). For other provinces, use the GST calculator; to take tax off any total, the reverse sales tax calculator.
