Questions
How do I calculate GST?
Multiply the price before tax by 5% and round to the cent. In provinces with PST, RST or QST, that tax is worked out separately on the same pre-tax price; in HST provinces, one combined rate replaces both.
Which provinces charge HST?
Ontario (13%), Nova Scotia (14% since April 2025), New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island (15%).
Which provinces only charge GST?
Alberta and the three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut) charge 5% GST only.
How do I take GST off a total?
Switch the calculator to Remove tax and enter the tax-included total. It divides by one plus the tax rate, then corrects any one-cent rounding difference so the parts add up exactly.
